Hello Entrepreneurs!

A growing benefit we?ve been hearing about from members is that in addition to making new friends, Meetup is helping them to network professionally.

If you currently organize an Entrepreneur Meetup or have had success networking with other professionals, please let us know.

We?d like to talk to you more about your experience and share it with others.

Drop us a line @ pr@meetup.com -- and if it looks like we can drum up attention, we'll be back in touch to learn more.

Thanks!

Best,

Myles

Hi Myles,

Well as much as I would like to say we are doing well with meetings, it is not quite the case. We are in an area where the population just doesn't support meet ups. It seems difficult to get anyone to commit.

I was thinking an online meet up would be great. A chat room in here maybe where people could talk and share networking tips. Involve one another in different marketing ideas. Ultimately networking online!

? Am I way offline here??

Hello fellow Entrepreneurs!

Well, I just started the High Point (NC) Entrepreneur & (adding) Investment Meetup Group, and really would like some input on how to get the ball rolling. I have many great ideas and would like to share in intelligent, conversation with other like-minded individuals.

Any advice or help you can give me would be greatly appreciated!

I sent invites and waiting patiently! This is what I sent:

We are having our first meeting soon so come join us!

Sincerely,
Sheila M.

Are you folks ever gonna do anything about all the spam on this board?

On review of just the first 4 pages, the vast majority of posts are nothing more than advertising.

I posted about this problem on the organizers forum - and got no real worthy answer. I have tried to report the spam on this board, but hit the limit at 30... and there are hundreds more to go. Frustrating waste of time and effort.

No point even coming to this forum and trying to provide valid answers to business questions, so long as I have to wade thru' 99% spam.

Hi Nick,

The spam on Meetup boards annoys me at least as much as it annoys you. Unfortunately the boards are not actively moderated, but complaints sent to Meetup are handled in a very expedited way. Yes, the 30-per-month limit sucks, but there are other ways (even more efficient) to submit your complaints.

1 - Click the "Report inappropriate content" link in the bottom-right corner of each page (better yet: right-click it and select "Open in new window"). This will allow you to submit a list of message in one go, AND provide additional info on why this is spam (or even illegal, like all of the pyramid schemes on here).

2 - Send an email with links and information to abuse [at] meetup [dot] com.

Both types of complaints are handled courteously and fast and usually generate a response expressing thanks for notifying them.

I now have a list of several boards that I scan on a regular basis and submit clean-up lists on. Some boards have gone from 1000+ messages to less than 10. (Just to illustrate how much crud is out there.)

Thanks Adrian for the ALT. way to submit complaints.... however - I won't be doing the staff's job anytime soon. I tried, without much happening - other than get a few words without real meaning... and no "cure" on the visible horizon.

If Meetup can't get it's act together and ACT like a real business.... I will do as so many others do - that's vote with my feet (or, in this case - a click of the mouse) and say adios. I will just close the Small Town Entrepreneurs site on Meetup - and establish it elsewhere. (It's not like there isn't sufficient competition for groups/BB space. I may even just add it to my commercial sites already in existence.) This site I built here was only a very small customer service extension for the main group I own and operate. It isn't ALL THAT important in the grander scheme of things.

You would have thought that the founders/owners would have researched a bit about their target market... a real quick look-see would have revealed exactly how reviled Spam is by most users.

Since WE pay the freight, not advert revenue - you would think that they would at least treat us (collectively) as decently as they would Wal-Mart, if they were a "sponsor"...

I am only posting this as a FINAL courtesy. Were it otherwise, I would have just closed shop by now and be done with it - not a word to anyone about why - just leave. I think another month or so to get their act together would be about right. We'll see what happens by the end of the year...

Oh well, if they wish to become another dot com bomb, that too is a choice. Life's full of them.
You make your choices, allocate the resources and do the work - then, you live with the results - like them or not.

Well, I guess you told me, eh Leighton?

Now, if there's a question in there somewhere (something beyond a personal insult) - please do ask it. I'm sure you have questions, unless you're a world-class expert in business & marketing, so what is that "positive" thing you want to know about - or - I should be posting about? (Have you actually read anything I've already posted? There is some good stuff on this board that isn't SPAM.)

Sidenote: I have a question for you... When is MA gonna' outlaw MLM's?
A number of other states (3 to date passed and several states pending) have already done so, so when is Mass. going to follow suit?

I am awaiting with bated breath your super-wonderfully-thought-out questions....

Nick

PS: If you want to see some of the great stuff I post publicly - and for free, you can contact me thru my group on this site... from there, I will lead you to more REAL business information than you'll find anywhere, including all that "biz-info junk" you have to pay for. More than 50 years 'IN business' experience, and I share all of that accumulated knowledge & lessons learned with all that will bother to seek it out.

And finally, a word about what I do - a brief "bio" as it were:

Old Nikko" is a highly successful entrepreneur, business consultant, and personal achievement coach to MANY, MANY hundreds of friends, neighbors, family members and independent entrepreneurs world-wide... and, is a master at helping people transform their lives by creating, developing, and improving profitable "real-world" businesses of all kinds and sorts... Serving the micro- and small-business communities for more than 50 years, achieving excellent results for his friends and clientele in small businesses they can proudly call "MY OWN."

Leighton, Thanks for the personal insults... and your SPAM.

I would refer you to the following:

Meetup Terms of Service Agreement [http://www.meetup.com...]
4. Use of Platform
4.2 Grounds for Removal, Sanction and/or Suspension
. Notwithstanding any other provision of this Agreement, the following types of actions are cause for immediate repeal and/or suspension of your account:
a. (iv) "stalk" or otherwise harass another.
(v) advertise merchandise, auctions, services or commercial websites, including offers to trade or charitable solicitations unrelated to the topic or spirit of the Meetup Group.

Your inappropriate posts are clearly in violation of the Meetup.com rules and terms of service in both advertising your for-profit enterprise and making personal insults as a form of harassment.

I hope that the staff here will take immediate, appropriate remedial action.

Let's have a look at the YTB financials, and see how "good" this company really is:
Net loss grew from $2.1 million in 2004 to $8.1 million in 2005.
One more point of interest is on the balance sheet: the Net Tangible Assets (book value) of YTB was $615,000 at the end of 2003, NEGATIVE $730,000 at the end of 2004 and a whopping NEGATIVE $1.7 million at the end of 2005.

So, YTB really lives by the well-known (and despised) principle: "We are operating at a loss, but we're making it up in volume!".

I can see a bright future ahead for YTB: bankruptcy!
Which will make their "residual income guarantee" completely worthless.

Diving deeper into their SEC filings shows that their average annnual payout to RTAs is far less than the annual contribution. I'm sure that there are some (at the top) who are making money (like the board), but the vast majority is loosing money, just like the company itself.
